Qaid-e-Sukoon
Some hearts build walls. Some people become the reason those walls finally fall.
Preface
Zayaan Mirza had never been a man who believed in needing someone.
At thirty-one, he possessed everything most people spent their lives chasing—wealth, power, respect, and a name that commanded attention wherever it was spoken. He was disciplined, intimidating, and almost impossible to read. His decisions were calculated, his emotions carefully guarded, and his private life protected by walls no one had ever managed to cross.
Love, in his opinion, was an unnecessary complication.
Marriage was a responsibility.
And feelings?
Feelings were best kept under control.
Then his family introduced him to Meher Rahman.
Twenty-three, sweet-natured, expressive, and blessed with a talent for speaking her mind at precisely the wrong moment, Meher was nothing like the woman Zayaan had imagined sharing his life with. She loved her books, treasured her family, dreamed of building a career through her illustrations, and possessed an irritating habit of looking directly at him whenever everyone else lowered their eyes.
She was not intimidated by his reputation.
Well, not entirely.
His expressions did frighten her occasionally.
But that was beside the point.
Their marriage began as an arrangement—two families, a series of conversations, and an agreement that appeared perfectly reasonable on paper. Zayaan expected a quiet, manageable partnership. Meher expected respect, honesty, and enough freedom to remain the person she had always been.
Neither expected love.
Certainly not the kind that would creep into their lives through ordinary mornings, ridiculous arguments, stolen glances, and moments of tenderness neither knew how to acknowledge.
For Zayaan, falling in love meant losing control of the one thing he had spent years protecting: his heart.
For Meher, loving Zayaan meant discovering that the man behind the cold expression was far more complicated than he appeared. His silences concealed old wounds, his protectiveness sometimes crossed into stubbornness, and his rare moments of tenderness were worth far more than the grand gestures he would never willingly make.
But Meher was not born to disappear inside someone else's world.
She would love him, challenge him, laugh at him, argue with him, and remind him that marriage was not about one person holding all the power. It was about two people choosing each other, even when choosing was difficult.
And Zayaan would have to learn the hardest lesson of his life: a woman who loves you is not someone you own. She is someone who trusts you enough to stay—and someone you must respect enough to let her choose.
Meanwhile, the Mirza household would provide absolutely no assistance in maintaining his dignity.
Between a meddlesome grandmother, a younger brother who considered teasing his elder sibling a full-time profession, and a mischievous cat with questionable morals, Zayaan's carefully organised existence was about to descend into chaos.
As if marriage itself were not enough.
Then the past began knocking at his door.
Old secrets, unanswered questions, and the shadow of his father's death threatened to disturb the fragile peace he was beginning to find. Zayaan would have to face the truth he had spent years avoiding, while learning that protecting the woman he loved did not mean shutting her out.
Because Meher had never promised to stand behind him.
She had promised to stand beside him.
This is not simply a story about a cold man falling in love with a sweet girl. It is a story about trust, healing, family, and the courage it takes to open a heart that has been locked away for far too long.
It is about a marriage that begins with an arrangement and grows into a choice.
About a man who once feared that love would imprison him, only to discover that the right kind of love can set him free.
And about a woman who becomes his peace without ever surrendering her own.
Because sometimes, the most beautiful qaid is not a prison at all.
It is the place where a guarded heart finally feels safe enough to rest.
Qaid-e-Sukoon.
His unexpected love.
Her chosen home.
Their forever.
